On 29th June 2021, the Fifth Meeting of the National Statistical Offices of the ECO Member States/7th High Level Expert Group Meeting on Statistics was held virtually and hosted by Secretariat. The Meeting was attended by esteemed Delegations of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Islamic Republic of Iran, Republic of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Republic of Tajikistan, Republic of Turkey and Turkmenistan as well as ECO Secretariat.

On 29th June 2021, the Fifth Meeting of the National Statistical Offices of the ECO Member States/7th High Level Expert Group Meeting on Statistics was held virtually and hosted by Secretariat. The Meeting was attended by esteemed Delegations of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Islamic Republic of Iran, Republic of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Republic of Tajikistan, Republic of Turkey and Turkmenistan as well as ECO Secretariat.
Ambassador Dr. Hüseyin Avni Bؤ±çaklؤ±, Deputy Secretary General of ECO opened and chaired this high level Meeting noting that the ECO regional economy is presently restoring its pre-covid19 pandemic sustainable normalcy. Along this path, the role of statistics was marked as critical. Establishment of ECO Statistical Network in 2011, further operationalized via ECOSTAT, presents bright evidence of cooperation among Member States in the area of statistical data & information sharing. As with today’s global realities tuned toward building post-pandemic resilient economies, the emphasis was put on application of technologically new statistical analytics to produce real time numerical value of the extent and scope of the ECO Region’s economic growth.
Honorable Sylap Sh. Velbegov, Chairman of State Statistics Committee of Turkmenistan in his statement highlighted the importance of statistics in policy development by presenting significant developments in Turkmenistan and, in that regard, stressed on sharing knowledge and statistical expertise accumulated by states at the ECO regional level.
Mr. Seyed Nematollah Mifrallah Nassiri, Deputy Head of the Statistical Center of the Islamic Republic of Iran (SCI) emphasized on the key importance of knowledge sharing and statistical capacity building among ECO Member States and, in that regard, informed the Member States that SCI’s Statistical Research and Training Center (SRTC) may provide the best of its practice-based expertise to ECO Member States.
Heads of Delegations of the ECO Member States delivered key note statements reflecting results-based statistical developments in countries while, at the same time, emphasizing the importance of addressing new technology-driven and thus modernized statistics’ requirements via regional statistics, especially, on Business Register’s development, FISIM with emphasis on Gross Value Added, Price Statistics and Tourism Statistics. The previous proposals of the Member States on the Applied Statistics, Demography, Applied Statistical Research, GIS and System Development have met with the offer of technical support from within ECO.
With the intention to share knowledge via intensive statistical capacity building in the ECO region, the Member States have agreed on the “Five Year Strategic Plan on Statistics”.
On the ECO Statistical Capacity Building Programme, the Member States appreciated that the project proposal is designed to introduce new technology-driven statistical tools and, that it had been supported by the five ECO Member States. In this regard, they tasked the Secretariat to develop the consolidated project document based on the aforementioned proposal, being a collaborative effort of ECO and FAOSTAT.
On the implementation of statistics-related provisions of the ECO Work Programme 2021, the Member States noted the fulfillment of the tasks in regard of the ECO’s periodic statistical reporting and updating the ECO Key Statistical Indicators (ECOKSI).
