The Secretary General of International Road Transport Union (IRU) Mr. Umberto De Pretto visited ECO on 17 December, 2023. The meeting between the two Secretary Generals of ECO and IRU reviewed cooperation in international and regional context between the two organizations and discussed further areas for interaction.
The ECO Secretary General Ambassador Khusrav Noziri highlighted the existing excellent and result oriented relations between the two organizations and praised the role of IRU in contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals through various projects and in particular implementation of TIR transit system in the ECO region that has enhanced the region’s ranking as the leading TIR Carnet user in the world. He also referred to some of the ECO-IRU flagship projects including establishment of ECO-TIR Associations Consultative Group (ECO-TIRACG) and appreciated to role of IRU in this connection.
Ambassador Noziri also highlighted the newly established Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan-Turkmenistan-Iran-Turkiye (KUTIT) as well as Tajikistan-Uzbekistan-Turkmenistan-Iran-Turkiye (TUTIT) multimodal corridors and invited the IRU to assist in developing those corridors.
The Secretaries General also discussed expansion of cooperation on digitalization, decarbonization and capacity building and agreed to continue the constructive interactions between the two organizations.
