On October 14, 2020 “Perspectives and Challenges of Regional Electricity Markets: Harnessing Trade and Investment Opportunities” jointly organized by the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) Secretariat and the Energy Charter Secretariat. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the meeting was held by online means.

On October 14, 2020 “Perspectives and Challenges of Regional Electricity Markets: Harnessing Trade and Investment Opportunities” jointly organized by the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) Secretariat and the Energy Charter Secretariat. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the meeting was held by online means.
Representatives from ECO Member States, namely Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, and international and regional organizations such as European Commission, World Bank, Asian Development Bank, UNIDO, and etc.participated in the meeting.
In their opening remarks, H.E. Hadi Soleimanpour, Secretary General of ECO, and H.E. Urban Rusnak, Secretary General of Energy Charter, expressed their mutual resolve that the subject event provides a platform to discuss the issues related to electricity cooperation, including exchange of best practices and lessons learnt for developing regional electricity markets and infrastructure projects as well as facilitating cross-border power trade and transport corridors. It was indicated that today’s event is to further promote a flagship project on the establishment of ECO Regional Electricity Market.
During the meeting, successful examples of integrated electricity markets, regional and subregional infrastructure projects to boost trade in electricity and regional transmission systems, as well as new initiatives to consolidate trade and exchange of power in the region by other actors have been introduced by European Commission, World Bank, Asian Development Bank and other international experts.
The meeting as well, devoted to deliver a gist of ToR for launching an efficient project through consideration of the initial positions of Member States to ensure an all-inclusive and feasible project.
