The 287th Meeting of the ECO Council of Permanent Representatives was held on May 6, at the ECO Headquarters.
Chaired by the Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the meeting discussed and approved various issues on its agenda, including preparations for the upcoming High Level Committee Meeting of Deputy Foreign Ministers on May 27-28, 2024.
The meeting also featured a presentation by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Iran Chief of Mission Ms. Lalini Veerassamy, on possible cooperation opportunities between ECO and IOM, in particular joint organization of a workshop on “Trafficking in Persons and Human Smuggling in the ECO Region.”
Further briefing on IOM’s activities, Ms. Veerassamy also underscored the global counter-trafficking initiatives of IOM, and anticipated that the IOM-ECO joint workshop may convene experts, policymakers, and practitioners from ECO member states to facilitate a comprehensive exchange of knowledge and strategies, including discussions on legal challenges and the role of technology in tracking and preventing trafficking.
