ECO Deputy Secretary General Ambassador Hüseyin Avni Bıçaklı attended the Sixth Session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6), which commenced to take place in Nairobi, Kenya from February 26 to March 1, 2024. The Session aimed at addressing the global environmental crisis through multilateral efforts focusing on climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution.

Ambassador Bıçaklı delivered a statement at the meeting and engaged with the representatives of ECO Member States. He also met with Ms. Ligia Noronha, UN Assistant Secretary-General and Head of UNEP New York Office. The two sides focused on enhancing ECO-UNEP cooperation, particularly in sustainable mining and water management, as well as updating their existing Memorandum of Understanding to reflect joint environmental priorities and continued collaboration.

UNEA, as the sole global environmental forum, establishes international environmental policies and law. ECO has been an observer in UNEA since 2015, following a cooperation agreement with UNEP established in August 2004 to formalize their collaborative environmental endeavors.
