In the course of its seventy-seventh session on August 25, 2023, the United Nations General Assembly adopted by consensus the resolution entitled “Cooperation between the United Nations and the Economic Cooperation Organization”.

The resolution encompasses various dimensions of UN-ECO relationship and lays out a comprehensive structure for strengthening cooperation with the UN system including its specialized agencies, funds and programmes.

The resolution, submitted for adoption by the Republic of Azerbaijan, the current chair of ECO, includes wide ranging areas such as trade, transport, energy, agriculture, industry, human resource development and tourism.

The document recognizes endeavours of the Economic Cooperation Organization to realize Sustainable Development Goals in the region, especially those pertaining to connectivity and clean energy. It also encourages and invites all the relevant international financial and specialized institutions of the UN to expand cooperation with ECO to make the region more sustainably developed and resilient.

Granted observer status in the United Nations General Assembly in October 1993, ECO regularly participates in UN’s annual sessions at UN Headquarters in New York.
