Tehran – July 29, 2024
The international workshop on “Combating Trafficking in Persons and Human Smuggling in the ECO Region” opened today at the ECO Secretariat in Tehran, featuring representatives from Member States and UN bodies. This event, the first collaboration between the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) since their 2009 MoU, underscores the need for coordinated efforts against human trafficking and smuggling.
ECO Secretary General Ambassador Khusrav Noziri and IOM Iran Chief of Mission Ms. Lalini Veerassamy highlighted the region’s significant challenges, noting that the ECO member states host around 18 million migrants, or 6% of the global migrant population (UN DESA, 2020). They stressed the importance of unified action to address migration’s adverse effects.
Key speakers included IOM Deputy Director General Ms. Ugochi Daniels, Iran’s Resident Coordinator (a.i.) Ms. Yumiko Ishikawa, and former Kazakh Deputy Foreign Minister Mr. Madina Jarbussynova, who discussed regional trafficking and smuggling trends.
The workshop aims to boost cross-border collaboration and create actionable recommendations for combating transnational crimes. The chairperson reaffirmed ECO’s commitment to working with international partners to tackle migration challenges collectively.
