On 30 September 2026, the ECO Transport and Communications Directorate and the Infrastructure Division of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) conducted online consultations on the bilateral cooperation in transport sector, including co-organizing a meeting titled “Implementation of the Awaza Programme of Action for Landlocked Developing Countries 2034 in the ECO Region”. This meeting is part of the ECO Calendar of Events 2026 to be held on the sidelines of the Fifth ESCAP Ministerial Conference on Transport in November 2026 in Bangkok.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed substantive and logistical aspects of the side event and agreed to coordinate their efforts to ensure its successful organization.
During the meeting, the ECO also invited ESCAP to contribute into the ECO upcoming programmes and events, including 14th ECO Ministerial Meeting on Transport and its private sector sideline meeting scheduled for 15 October 2026 in Astana. They also explored possible partnership and contribution by ESCAP in organizing the envisaged “International Financing Conference for ECO Projects and Corridors” to be held in the first half of 2027.
The discussions provided an opportunity to advance cooperation between ECO and ESCAP on transport connectivity and identify ways and means to implement shared priorities for intra and inter-regional connectivity.
