ECO Deputy Secretary General Ambassador Silapberdi Nurberdiyev held a meeting with the Head of the Foreign Affairs Department of the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority of the Republic of Türkiye (AFAD), Mr. Muhammet Maruf Yaman. The meeting’s primary objective was to explore avenues of collaboration to enhance regional cooperation in disaster risk reduction (DRR).
During the discussion, Ambassador Nurberdiyev underscored the importance of fortifying regional cooperation in the realm of disaster risk management. He conveyed his gratitude to AFAD for their hosting of the forthcoming “Winter Drill” and the subsequent Technical Working Group on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) scheduled to occur in Erzurum, Türkiye, in the first quarter of 2025. Ambassador Nurberdiyev also emphasized the successful 9th Ministerial Meeting, which took place on 16-17 September in Dushanbe, stressing the imperative of sharing experiences among Member States to bolster regional collaboration.
Mr. Yaman affirmed AFAD’s readiness to support ECO’s initiatives in DRR. Also noting the technical meeting, planned coincidentally with the “Winter Drill” for March 2025, he remarked that AFAD, as a constituent of the Asian and Pacific Centre for the Development of Disaster Information Management (APDIM), is keen to collaborate with ECO on a joint workshop concentrating on earthquake risks.
