The ECO Secretary General, H.E. Ambassador Khusrav NOZIRI and the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of ESCAP, Ms. Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for further institutionalizing the existing cooperative relations between the two organizations. The signing ceremony of the MoU was organized during the 25th Meeting of the ECO Council of Ministers (COM) held in Ashgabat. The Executive Secretary of ESCAP, Ms. Armida, participated in the ceremony through video conferencing.
The new MoU between ESCAP and ECO will foster the ongoing strategic partnership and long-term collaboration in various areas of mutual interests. Through this MoU, ECO and ESCAP also reaffirm their commitment towards achieving internationally agreed development goals enshrined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the ECO Vision 2025.
In his remarks delivered during the ceremony, the ECO Secretary General, H.E. Ambassador Khusrav NOZIRI underlined the significance of cooperative relations with ESCAP towards realization and advancement of common goals and objectives in the region. He stated that in order to boost regional economic recovery in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a strong need to facilitate trade and investment activities in the region and in this regard the complimentary role of the two organizations is indispensable. While highlighting the significance of cooperation between the ECO and ESCAP in transportation sector, the ECO Secretary General mentioned that enhanced connectivity in the region is a pre-requisite for boosting intra and inter-regional economic cooperation and integration into the global economy.
The Executive Secretary of ESCAP, Dr. Armida Salsiah, highlighted the productive collaboration between ECO and ESCAP in the last 28 years especially in the areas of capacity building and supporting policy dialogue at the regional level. She further stated that with its overlapping membership in South, West and Central Asia, the two organizations could potentially connect these sub-regions as well as connect Asia with Europe.
In his concluding remarks, the current Chairman of the ECO and the Chairman of the 25th Meeting of the ECO Council of Ministers (COM), the Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, H.E. Mr. Rashid Meredov, expressed his great satisfaction on conclusion of the MoU between ECO and ESACP and declared that the signing of the MoU is a historic moment towards enhanced regional economic cooperation. He encouraged both the organizations to strengthen their partnership for ensuring regional sustainable development.
