The Delegation of ECO Secretariat took part in hybrid mode in the 5th Steering Committee Meeting of the Global Network of Regional Sustainable Energy Centres (GN-SEC) convened by United Nations Industrial Development Organization from 5 to 8 September 2022. The event brought together representatives from the centres, core donors and technical partners to discuss updates on the activities of the centres and create a “makerspace” for new initiatives, projects, events and activities.

The Delegation of ECO Secretariat took part in hybrid mode in the 5th Steering Committee Meeting of the Global Network of Regional Sustainable Energy Centres (GN-SEC) convened by United Nations Industrial Development Organization from 5 to 8 September 2022. The event brought together representatives from the centres, core donors and technical partners to discuss updates on the activities of the centres and create a “makerspace” for new initiatives, projects, events and activities.
ECO Deputy Secretary General, Dr. Huseyin Avni Bicakli, has delivered opening speech, where he emphasized importance of ECO playing as catalyst in bridging to meet the aspirations of its Member States to develop regional energy transition pathways. Dr.Bicakli particularly pointed out ECO-UNIDO collaboration in establishment of ECO Clean Energy Center as a promising future element of GN-SEC, which is also addressing south-south triangular cooperation agenda. In his concluding remarks, ECO Deputy Secretary General stressed significance of subject meeting in enhancing partnership among GN-SEC members to find synergies, exchange of experience and establishing global community of good practices in mainstreaming to clean energy sources.

Director of Energy Minerals and Environment Mr.Rovshan Mirzayev represented ECO Secretariat as a key co-initiator of ECO Clean Energy Center (CECECO). Mr.Mirzayev has made a presentation on establishment process of CECECO, challenges and achieved targets during last 3 years, as well as way forward to operationalize the Center along with possible cooperation potential within GN-SEC members.
In the meeting the heads of ten centres, representing various economic communities and more than 108 developing countries from the Africa Arab region, Asia Pacific, Latin America and Caribbean, concluded with a clear message: “In times of fossil fuel price and climate escalations, more than ever, regional cooperation is needed to accelerate the transition towards renewables and energy efficiency”.

The GN-SEC Steering Committee members invited UNIDO and the Secretariat of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) to co-host the next meeting in Baku, Azerbaijan, during the inauguration of the Clean Energy Centre of ECO (CECECO).
