On the invitation of the UNOSSC, the ECO Deputy Secretary General, Dr. Sayed Yahya Akhlaqi participated in an intergovernmental organization meeting on South-South and Triangular Cooperation in the Asia-Pacific Region as part of the commemoration of the UN Day for South-South Cooperation in Asia and the Pacific virtually held on September 14, 2021.

On the invitation of the UNOSSC, the ECO Deputy Secretary General, Dr. Sayed Yahya Akhlaqi participated in an intergovernmental organization meeting on South-South and Triangular Cooperation in the Asia-Pacific Region as part of the commemoration of the UN Day for South-South Cooperation in Asia and the Pacific virtually held on September 14, 2021.

In his remarks, Dr. Akhlaqi underlined the ECO’s activities and engagements that the Organization made in special consideration of the COVID-19. He informed about several post-pandemic initiatives taken by the ECO Secretariat to facilitate the Member States and the smooth intra-regional movement of essentially required supplies, particularly medicines and food stuff. He added that soon after the outbreak of the Corona virus the ECO Secretariat released a Preliminary Assessment Report concerning the potential impacts of COVID-19 on the economy of the ECO Region.

The panel discussion, inter alia, focused on three priority areas, i.e., climate change and green recovery, digital transformation, and SMEs Recovery and entrepreneurship. Such thematic areas are perceived as key areas in mitigating the socio-economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and to support and assist the countries of the global South to build back better. The event was aimed at making interactive deliberations on certain issues of multilateral interest, particularly, discussions on the latest developments in South-South and Triangular Cooperation at global and regional levels.
