The Informal Ministerial Meeting on Environment of the ECO Member States was held on December 9, 2023 on the sidelines of the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Dubai.
Chaired by H.E. Mr. Mukhtar Babayev, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan, under the theme of “Accelerating the Transition Towards a Resource Efficient, Sustainable and Circular ECO Region” the meeting reviewed the momentum of cooperation within ECO in the field of environment.
The ECO Secretary General Ambassador Khusrav Noziri delivered a detailed statement on the status of the ECO activities and initiatives on the environment, and the way forward. Further, the ECO Secretariat delivered a detailed presentation on the Regional Initiative on Resource Efficiency, Sustainability, and Circular Economy in the ECO Region (RESCUE), jointly initiated by the ECO Secretariat and the Chairmanship of Azerbaijan in ECO.
The delegates emphasized the need for more proactive engagement of the ECO Member States and speeding up actions on regional environmental agenda, while also expressing views on the draft ECO Cooperation Framework on the Environment (2023-2030). They also deliberated on the prospect of the recently established High-Level Dialogue Platform on Environmental Cooperation.
The meeting adopted a Joint Statement as its outcome document.
