The ECO Secretariat was among the organizations attended the annual meeting of the Working Party on Transport Trends and Economics (WP5) organized by the UN Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) from 23-25 September 2026 in Geneva. Country Members of the ECE and some other interested UN Members were present in the Meeting focusing mostly on the corridors and in initiatives connecting Europe to Asia.
The Meeting also received progress report on the work of “Coordination Committee on Trans-Caspian and Almaty-Tehran-Istanbul Corridors”, established in 2023 upon joint ECO-ECE initiative. The Working Party welcomed and supported the 2027-2028 Work Plan of the Coordination Committee and the “Istanbul Strategic Framework” developed by the 8th Meeting of the Coordination Committee held on 5 June 2026 in Istanbul.
The first day of the Working Party was allocated to a high-level special segment on “Connecting regions, strengthening corridors” with the participation of the deputy Ministers and high-level officials from different countries and organizations. The ECO Director for Transport and Communications, Seyed Jalaledin Alavi Sabzevari, shared ECO views and initiatives on the subject matter in the concluding panel of the special segment.
On the sideline of the Working Party meeting, he also had bilateral discussions with the representatives of the ECO Member States and partner organizations on the issues of interests. He also met with the officials of the International Road Transport Union (IRU) at its headquarters where both sides reviewed status of implementation of the ECO-IRU Action Plan 2026-2027 and agreed on some possible actions during the next 6 months.
