On October 25, 2022, ECO Secretariat, in close cooperation with the United Nations Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific (SIAP), UN Statistical Division (UNSD), Economic Council for Europe (UNECE) and Economic, Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) organized the virtual Training on Register Based Population and Housing Census (PHC) for ECO Member States.
The participants from the Republic of Azerbaijan, I.R. Iran, Republic of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, I.R. Pakistan, Republic of Tajikistan, Republic of Türkiye, Turkmenistan and Republic of Uzbekistan taken part in the subject training.
The ECO Secretariat was represented by Amb. Jandos Asanov, Deputy Secretary General who briefed the participants about goals and objectives of ECO in the area of regional statistics. Chief, Demographic Statistics and Technical Director of the 2020 World Programme for Population and Housing Censuses, United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) Dr. Srdjan Mrkiؤ‡ highlighted the UN goals and priorities in the development of both, official and administrative statistics. The Director of SIAP Dr. Shailja Sharma noted the increasing importance of register based PHC and highlighted progress in ECO-SIAP cooperation along this path.
The Training is set to last for three days. Its interactive framework allows the participants to receive first hand information and technical expertise on a wide range of statistical topics relating to conducting register based PHC in which Türkiye and Iran lead through notable expertise in handling high tech-driven statistical tools and applications. The resource persons from these countries as well as from Australia, Indonesia and Norway will effectively render their hands-on skills and share best practices with participants. The event will be certified based on fair evaluation and active interaction among experts.
