ECO Secretary General, Dr. Asad M. Khan, met with H.E. Rashid Meredov, Turkmenistan’s Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Minister of Foreign Affairs, on the sidelines of the 1st ECO Forum on Sustainable Development. Dr. Khan expressed appreciation for Turkmenistan’s key role in hosting the Forum and its ongoing efforts to strengthen regional cooperation for economic development. He also welcomed the upcoming 3rd UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries, scheduled for August 2025 in Awaza, and expressed gratitude for the invitation to participate in the International Conference dedicated to the “International Year of Peace and Trust” and the 30th Anniversary of Turkmenistan’s neutrality.

During their discussions, Dr. Khan highlighted the significance of the recent High-Level Meeting of Deputy Foreign Ministers, emphasizing the collective desire for reforms within the ECO to enhance its relevance and effectiveness. He informed Minister Meredov about the upcoming ECO Ministerial Meetings and the 17th ECO Summit in July 2025, requesting Turkmenistan’s active participation.

Acknowledging the importance of Turkmenistan’s strategic geographic position in enhancing regional connectivity and trade, the Secretary General also expressed appreciation for Turkmenistan’s initiatives in tourism and disaster risk reduction, and congratulated the country on its achievements in sustainable urban infrastructure development.
