ECO Secretary General Ambassador Khusrav Noziri had a bileteral meeting with the Director General of International Organization for Migration (IOM) and Coordinator of the UN Network on Migration, Ms. Amy Pope, on the sidelines of the 2024 High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development.
Emphasizing the significance of migration in the world, and noting that the ECO region is both a popular transit route and destination, Ambassador Noziri informed the IOM Director General about regional prospects, as well as priority areas of ECO.
The meeting also discussed the upcoming joint ECO-IOM workshop on “Trafficking in Persons and Migrant Smuggling in the ECO Region,” scheduled for July 29-30, 2024, in Tehran.
Referring to the existing Memorandum of Understanding between the two organizations, Ambassador Noziri expressed ECO’s readiness to strengthen collaboration on migration issues, including joint endeavours on trafficking, as well as ECO’s desire to obtain observership in IOM.
The interaction further discussed the root couses of mass migration, acknowledging that Turkiye and Iran are among countries hosting the most immigrants. Both sides expressed their desires to extend their partnership to adress the challanges of migration.
