On 14 November 2024, the ECO Secretary General Dr. Asad M. Khan had a bilateral meeting with H.E. Dr. Shina Ansari, the Vice-President of the Islamic Republic of Iran and and Head of the Department of Environment on the margins of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The Iranian Vice-President highlighted the great importance that the new government attaches to the environment and reiterated that environmental issues are common challenges in our region and addressing them require collective action. She acknowledged ECO’s potential and capacity to lead the efforts for enhancing environment related cooperation in the ECO region.

Dr. Khan, while appreciating the openness for further environmental cooperation, enumerated the key factors driving the need for reinvigorating regional cooperation on environment and climate-related issues and expanding the scope of our relationships in the region. In this context, he emphasized the significance of a regular and sustained dialogue at all levels as the key to creating the required momentum for collaborative environmental action across the region.
