In his exclusive remarks, the ECO Secretary General underlined the importance of trade and economic diplomacy as an effective approach to secure nations’ development targets through bilateral and multilateral activism. In this regard, he underscored the significance of economic blocs and their broader prospects to facilitate the accomplishment of such goals in multiple areas of human activities.

Recalling the history of the Economic Cooperation Organization, he emphasized that the establishment of ECO was primarily aimed at promoting and creating conducive conditions for sustainable socioeconomic development in the Member States. He mentioned that agenda of ECO was perceived to be implemented with nexus approach as well as advanced methods of joint commercial diplomacy and activism, mobilizing the socioeconomic potential of the region.

Speaking at the event, he summarized ECO’s efforts and activities being made for greater regional integration. To this end, he referred some prioritized areas, including trade and connectivity, energy, tourism, food and agriculture, health, disaster risk reduction etc. Citing the post-COVID conditions, he noted that the regional and global economies witnessed substantial decline due to the challenges posed by the pandemic that depressed socioeconomic progress at national, regional and international levels. Similarly, the ECO region experienced economic slowdown throughout the peak COVID’s time, he said. However, the Secretary General illuminated some curative measures taken by the ECO for the continuity of work and resumption of socioeconomic activities in the region.
