Islamabad, 15–16 April 2025
The Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), in collaboration with the ECO Educational Institute, convened the 1st Expert Group Meeting on the Internationalization of Higher Education in Islamabad. Hosted by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. The event brought together representatives from ECO Member States, including Azerbaijan, Iran, Pakistan, Türkiye and Turkmenistan.
The meeting commenced with an overview of the current status of higher education, sharing best practices related to its internationalization across the ECO region. Notably, representatives from international organizations such as the British Council and the European Union Commission participated, offering insights and showcasing ongoing projects aligned with the theme.
A significant focus was placed on discussing the Draft Action Plan for the Internationalization of Higher Education. Participants contributed their perspectives and proposed enhancements to ensure the plan addresses the diverse needs of ECO Member States.
During the closing ceremony, Secretary General of ECO Dr. Asad M. Khan delivered remarks emphasizing the essential role of education—especially for youth—in fostering sustainable development within the ECO region. He highlighted the necessity of a multi-stakeholder dialogue to create a conducive educational environment and reaffirmed ECO’s commitment to supporting education-related initiatives in line with Member States’ priorities, particularly in light of the development of a new ECO Vision Document in 2025.
