The Secretary General of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), Dr. Asad M. Khan, addressed the High-Level International Conference on Glaciers’ Preservation, taking place from May 29 to June 1, 2025, in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. The conference, inaugurated by H.E. Emomali Rahmon, the Honorable President of the Republic of Tajikistan, brought together heads of state and government, ministers, delegates, and representatives from various regional and international organizations.
Dr. Khan extended gratitude to the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan for hosting this significant event and acknowledged Tajikistan’s proactive role in international water diplomacy. He emphasized the existential threat posed by glacial melt to the region, describing it as a pressing challenge that demands urgent attention. Dr. Khan highlighted the critical role of intergovernmental regional organizations in raising awareness about the importance of glaciers, supporting countries in climate adaptation and mitigation efforts, and fostering regional cooperation to safeguard shared natural resources.
Dr. Khan also acknowledged the commendable efforts of ECO Member States in addressing climate change and hosting significant international events focused on environmental sustainability. He reaffirmed ECO’s commitment to collaborating with its Member States and international partners to enhance regional environmental cooperation and tackle the multifaceted challenges of climate change.
