On the sidelines of his visit to Islamabad to attend the Islamabad–Tehran–Istanbul (ITI) Rail and Road Corridor meetings, the ECO Secretary General Dr. Asad M. Khan held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Musadik Masood Malik, Minister of Climate Change of Pakistan.
Highlighting that the ECO region contributes minimally to emissions but suffers disproportionately, the meeting called for a unified approach that can amplify resilience and advocacy concerning the sustained environmental degradation facing the region. In this regard, they underscored the importance of the upcoming 6th Ministerial Meeting on Environment, to be hosted by Uzbekistan in Samarkand, which may represent a pivotal moment for renewal of joint commitments.
Also underscoring the importance of enhanced collaboration on Disaster Risk Reduction, the two sides reviewed preparations for the 10th ECO Ministerial Meeting on Disaster Risk Reduction, to be preceded by a “High-Level Working Group (HLWG) Meeting on DRR.
The Secretary General further informed the Minister on the progress of the ECO flagship projects, namely, the ECO Clean Energy Centre and the Regional Initiative on Resource Efficiency, Sustainability, and Circular Economy in the ECO Region (RESCUE).
