March 13, 2025-Baku
At the 12th Global Baku Forum, the Secretary General of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), H.E. Dr. Asad M. Khan, participated as a panelist in a high-level discussion on “The UN Pact of the Future: Building a New Global Consensus”. The UN Pact of the Future is the outcome document of the UN Summit of the Future, held in New York on September 22-23, 2024. The Panel deliberated on the document’s vision and the pathways it outlines for reforming the international system to achieve a more peaceful, equitable, and prosperous world. It also explored actionable strategies to reform the international system, with participants advocating for greater inclusivity, equity, and responsiveness in global governance
During his intervention, Dr. Khan underscored the significance of the United Nations as the most viable platform available to the global community for fostering development, ensuring peace, and addressing shared challenges. He emphasized that while the UN remains indispensable, it is critical to address the gaps that have hindered its ability to meet the expectations placed upon it.
Dr. Khan highlighted the interplay between regionalism and multilateralism, dispelling the notion that regionalism is antithesis to multilateralism. Instead, he stressed that the former complements the latter. He referred to the successes of regional groupings such as the African Union, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations , and the European Union as examples from which the UN could draw lessons.
The Global Baku Forum serves as a vital platform for fostering dialogue on pressing global issues. Dr. Khan’s contributions to the discussion reflects ECO’s commitment to promoting regional and global cooperation for sustainable development and peace.
