The United Nations Resident Coordinator to the Islamic Republic of Iran, H.E. Mr. Stefan Priesner, accompanied by Ms. Christina Hajdu, Head of Resident Coordinator’s Office (RCO) and Mr. Mohammad Ali Farzin, Chief Economist of UN-RCO in Iran visited the ECO Secretariat on January 31, 2022. At the very outset, Amb. Khusrav Noziri, the ECO Secretary General, welcomed the UN Resident Coordinator at the ECO Secretariat.

The United Nations Resident Coordinator to the Islamic Republic of Iran, H.E. Mr. Stefan Priesner, accompanied by Ms. Christina Hajdu, Head of Resident Coordinator’s Office (RCO) and Mr. Mohammad Ali Farzin, Chief Economist of UN-RCO in Iran visited the ECO Secretariat on January 31, 2022. At the very outset, Amb. Khusrav Noziri, the ECO Secretary General, welcomed the UN Resident Coordinator at the ECO Secretariat.
During the meeting, the ECO Secretary General and the UN Resident Coordinator held a candid discussion on issues of mutual interest and focused on ways and means to enhance constructive cooperation between the UN-RCO and ECO Secretariat. The ECO Secretary General briefed H.E. Mr. Stefan Priesner about the key activities of ECO in various spheres including Trade, Transport and Connectivity, Energy, Tourism, Economic Growth as well as Social Welfare and Environment. Amb. Khusrav Noziri apprised the UN Resident Coordinator about ECO Vision 2025 and highlighted the main initiatives being pursued by ECO in order to materialize the Vision. The UN Resident Coordinator was also briefed about the historical background, current structure and the key decision making organs of the ECO.
The Secretary General informed the UN Resident Coordinator that ECO gives special importance to its relations with UN due to the shared objectives and goals of the two organizations. The Secretary General briefed about the ongoing ECO-UN cooperation in different sectors and emphasized the importance of technical and financial assistance of UN Agencies for ECO’s programs and activities. Ambassador Noziri expressed his readiness to strengthen institutional linkages and boosting partnership with the relevant UN Agencies in order to materialize the shared goals enshrined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and ECO’s Vision 2025.
The UN Resident Coordinator expressed keen interest in the activities and projects of ECO in different sectors and expressed willingness to promote cooperation between the UN and the ECO. He informed the ECO Secretary General that UN-RCO is in the process of finalizing the framework of cooperation between Iran and the UN for 2023-2027 and ECO being a regional organization can provide an excellent platform to implement various UN projects especially under the umbrella of South-South Cooperation.

Following the in-depth exchange of views, both sides agreed on action plan for future cooperation, inter alia, UN-ECO cooperation on priority areas especially in the areas of sustainable development, health, environment, tourism and drugs control. The two sides also agreed to organize joint activities of mutual interest in Tehran in 2022. In the end, the ECO Secretary General thanked the UN Resident Coordinator for visiting the ECO Secretariat and expressed his confidence that cooperation between the two organizations would further enhance in the coming period for the realization of common goals and objectives.
