The workshop on “Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs): Bio-safety and Regulation” was jointly organized virtually by the Biotechnology Research Institute of the Islamic Republic of Iran (ABRII) and the ECO Secretariat, on October 25, 2023.
Attended by delegates from Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Türkiye, the participants exchanged information and discussed on the genetically modified organisms during the event.
Mr. Gurkan Polat, the Director of Agriculture and Industry Section at ECO Secretariat, emphasized on the salient role of the biotechnology in agriculture and prevalent benefits of biotechnology, including increase in crop production and nutrition value, fresher produce and better taste, chemical tolerance and disease resistance. He also pointed to the challenges of food security in the region, underlining the need for cooperation on strengthening capacities to take advantage of opportunities of agricultural biotechnology.
The meeting further discussed new technologies in genetic engineering, bio-safety issues and risk assessments of GMOs and GMO bio-safety regulations.
